The saving grace of vernacular schools

Many Malaysians are caught by surprise over the formidable roles played by Chinese and Tamil schools that it looks as if these vernacular schools are taking after the tradition of mission schools and the Catholic La Salle Brothers education system.

While not an exact duplication, Chinese and Tamil schools arguably give a better all round education than government schools, the Islamic religious schools and ‘madrasahs,’ that they are attracting enrollment from a cross section of society.

Nowadays it is not unusual to witness a growing number of Malay Muslim students attending Chinese and Tamil schools because these students and their parents are impressed by the quality of education offered by vernacular schools.

The reason is because in a plural, secular country like Malaysia, the emphasis should be on a holistic education which is not being offered by government schools and the numerous Islamic religious schools.

But vernacular schools are under much duress and threat of closure by Malay rights groups, Islamic extremists and lunatic fringe groups who are obviously envious of the success and popularity of these schools even among Malay Muslims.

The unity government must cast in iron the position of vernacular schools as enshrined under the Federal Constitution and safeguard these schools and assist in their development and growth for the country to produce capable leaders for tomorrow,
