Corruption is a way of life in Malaysia

BY: MAY FOONG
There are many intriguing queries from Malaysians on social media pages as to why corruption is endemic, why it is so widespread and rampant, and why it is getting so difficult to wipe out corruption completely.
For cogent reasons and answers, Malaysians have to revisit the race riots of May 13, 1969 and the rise of Tun Abdul Razak to power, who upon being installed as prime minister, implemented the New Economic Policy or NEP.
The NEP was supposed to be an affirmative action policy to uplift the socio economic status of Bumiputras, but it has backfired terribly on the nation and, not only that, it opened the doors to a whole world of corruption for Malaysians.
Since then, corruption has been embedded in the public delivery system and it is seen as having established itself as Standard Operating Procedure or the SOP for all dealings with the government of the day.
Now Malaysia is in the vice like grip of corruption which is taking its toll on the nation and it looks like unless there is great political will by the unity government the practice of corruption in this country is set to stay.
This is really unwelcome and bad news for graft busting by the government but the writing is on the wall and unless every Malaysian wakes up to wanting to be corrupt free, this nation will move on from being a rogue state to a failed state.
