Confusing globalization with westernization

BY: VIJAYA LAKSHMI
In India, at the turn of the century, children still addressed their fathers as ‘Appa’ and their mothers as ‘Amma’ but with the advent of globalization Indian children now use the terms ‘Daddy and Mummy’ to refer to their parents.
The question asked is, what was wrong with calling their parents ‘Appa and Amma’? There was absolutely nothing wrong with it but because of the onslaught of globalization it is perhaps in India where the aping of the West is very strong.
Behavioural experts from the West have long contended that Indians have a hang up and an inferiority complex when they compare themselves with Westerners when in actual fact there is really no need for them to mimic the Western way of life.
India by itself is a Great Nation that has stood the test of time and most Westerners are fascinated and impressed by the country and its people yet this is not the case shared by Indians themselves with others.
Even the Indian diaspora around the world have a keen interest in forging links and maintaining ties with India although they have emigrated to other nations of the world for differing reasons and causes.
This is why it is important for the Indian government to educate their people and create awareness that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Indian way of life, and, in actual fact Westerners are hoping that they will not change but just be themselves.
