Monitoring funds raised for charity

In an interview granted to Bernama and RTM, prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that there was a comprehensive need for openness and transparency in managing funds raised for charity in the country.
Anwar stated that at present there were enough regulations in force to ensure that the collection of funds for charity were in line with aims and objectives and will be channelled to the respective target groups as beneficiaries.
He stated that the government of the day prioritises financial management with an emphasis on proper governance in order to prevent funds from being misused by irresponsible persons in the process of their donation drive.
He added that his government has to be meticulous in governance and stressed that funds collected must follow proper procedures and the amount raised and distributed should be transparent in nature.
Anwar’s comments come in the wake of a number of complaints by donors who contributed to charities only to realise that the funds have either been misappropriated or used for wrongful purposes.
The general public are being advised to exercise caution when giving and donating to charities as Malaysians are known to be compassionate, caring and generous but must make sure that charitable organisations follow rules and regulations.
