National education system a ‘dismal failure’
According to the Parent Action Group for Education or PAGE, the failure of the Malaysian education system is due to poor policy implementation, lack of accountability and the politicisation of the sector in the country.
In the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) in 2022, Malaysia was ranked a lowly 51 out of 81 countries in subjects such as Science, Mathematics and English which is why PAGE is seeking for the government to arrest the rot.
Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that this clearly shows the failure to acknowledge faults in the education system which has drastically affected the country’s global ranking in the Pisa.
Pisa assessors cited in their findings that Malaysia ranked fourth in the ten member Asean region and the nation’s students scores recorded the biggest drop in percentage compared to Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
PAGE lamented the fact that for many years they have been struggling to improve English language proficiency and promote English for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) but their recommendations have been ignored.
Others such as LeapEd Services highlighted the need to shift from content mastery to learning mastery and if this can be implemented in Malaysian schools it would help students learn specific subject matters and develop critical thinking skills.
