Malaysian prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, called on the people in the country to give their support to ongoing investigations against top politicians, their family members and cronies for allegedly stealing the wealth of the rakyat.
He stated openly that it is strange that there are Malaysians who label him as vengeful and spiteful for taking action against corrupt politicians and businessmen and civil servants as it is his duty to protect the wealth of the nation.
While these high profile cases are obviously the tip of the iceberg, Malaysians are finding it hard to believe that they have put their trust in leaders who had the audacity to betray their belief in these people.
The emerging scandals and revelations that are surfacing seem like the opening of a can of worms and has caused Malaysians and the international community to focus and follow all the news on these events in social media.
Social media is abuzz with many commentaries on how billions can be siphoned by these leaders and the obvious lack of openness, transparency and checks and balances which have so far caused these culprits to be unscathed.
What is more horrendous to Malaysians is the belief now that these leaders have acted above the law and have gone unpunished for so long that decades old cases of corruption are now also being investigated by the Anwar administration.
