The downside of gambling
BY: CHA HUI YEE
Gambling has become a controversial activity and there are calls by various individuals and groups in this country to ban it altogether as there are negative factors or a downside to this pursuit by punters.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with betting at a casino, wagering on a horse race or indulging in digit games, the dark side of these activities must be highlighted that those who want to play learn to Play Responsibly.
Malaysians must be educated through public awareness programs on the dangers of gambling as not only can it destroy us financially but also our health, relationships, work, study and business can all be affected badly.
But this does not mean that there must be a blanket ban on gambling as it creates much needed employment and generates revenue but there must be an undertaking by the government to regulate, monitor and oversee all forms of gambling.
But gambling has received much unwanted negative press of horror stories in social media of gambling related suicides, dependence on loan sharks or ‘Ah Longs’ and rising cases of bankruptcy.
If all gambling activities are properly and rightfully managed people can derive a considerable amount of pleasure, whether they win or lose, and this can invariably lead to being a mature and advanced and developed nation.
