Rethink building road through Tawai
The Human Habitats Highways or 3H Coalition has urged the Sabah Cabinet to avoid building a road through the wildlife-rich Tawai Forest Reserve as it will be a major blow to conservation efforts in the state.
The decision by the Sabah Cabinet in building the Pan Borneo Highway by going through the Tawai Forest Reserve is seen as “disappointing” to the 3H Coalition and they called on the state government to reconsider their decision.
The 3H Coalition consists of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Borneo Futures, Danau Girang Field Centre, Forever Sabah, Jaringan Orang Asli Se Malaysia and a number of other wildlife preservation groups.
At present, the other groups include Land Empowerment Animals People, 1StopBorneo Wildlife, PACOS Trust, Save Rivers Network, Sabah Birdwatchers Association, Seratu Aatai and WWF Malaysia.
The 3H stated it appreciated if the mitigation plan to address the effects on the environment and wildlife on the route which goes through the Tawai Forest Reserve can be shared with them to encourage open comment and discussion from people.
The 3H Coalition is not opposed to economic development and the construction of the highway but it is deeply concerned over certain stretches, especially the 20.5km Sungai Baoto to Telupid stretch, which will have a negative impact on the environment.
