Ensuring food security is now vital

Food security and the self-sufficiency of supplies over the last twelve months has met with sporadic shortages especially chicken and eggs, mutton, cooking oil, rice and was replenished with government intervention.

Other shortages or insufficiency of supplies are to be expected from time to time and it is envisaged that Malaysia will join a growing list of nations who will face disruptions in the supply chain of food.

The reason for this is because past administrations did not pay heed to warnings from food security experts in the country, believing that there is ample and abundant food in the country that can never go out of supply.

But now that it looks that the country is on the path of the famished road, this fallacy of abundance has been debunked and the stark reality is that Malaysia is now susceptible to food shortages of essential items.

The government has to brainstorm and kick start schemes to provide for the daily food and beverage needs of Malaysians and put in place mechanisms that the rakyat will never go hungry or even have to put up with the rationing of food.

Beginning with essential food items, the government must avert disaster and ensure that food security is in place and there is a continuous and seamless supply of food that we do not have to be dependent on begging from other countries.
