Malaysia’s first waste to energy plant
A Berjaya EnviroParks project at Bukit Tagar is Malaysia’s first “waste to energy” renewable energy plant which is connected to the National Grid and has the capacity to generate 12 megawatts of energy.
This raw energy is enough to power 4,000 domestic homes because Berjaya EnviroParks has transformed ordinary landfills into sanitary landfills that can recycle waste into energy by using its innovative leachate treatment plant.
According to the Housing and Local Government Development Ministry, Berjaya EnviroParks invested RM310 million to build its first premier sanitary landfill and RM72 million to build the renewable energy plant.
The Ministry stated that Malaysia aims to be a renewable energy powerhouse by 2035 and plans to do so by installing a waste to energy plant in every state to help meet sustainable development goals.
The Ministry is also in discussions with strategic partners in the private sector to convert traditional landfills around the country into sanitary landfills to reduce waste and generate renewable energy and promote sustainable initiatives.
So far this year, the renewable energy produced in the country is only 3 percent and the remainder is generated by coal production which is nonrenewable and the government aims to increase renewable energy production to 40 percent by 2035.
