According to a study by Universiti Malaya’s Anthropology and Sociology Department, the vast consumption of online information by Gen Z individuals have caused them to be more individualistic in their needs and wants.

The study further revealed that a connected global community and easy access to information have influenced their perception of success compared to previous generations as the Gen Z have easy access to technology and information.

They are exposed to large and diverse viewpoints on cultures and are able to compare themselves with people around the world making them at once more optimistic and open minded about what can be achieved.

While the older generations value job security and dedication and commitment to their jobs, Gen Z’s definition of success is measured on how well they are recognized and they are not following traditional paths.

Gen Z’s feel they can choose to profit from social media through content or online entrepreneurship and believe they can be more successful through other methods than holding nine to five jobs.

The study noted that while Malaysians practise collectivism, prioritising group needs over individual needs, the younger generation priorities are focused on the importance of self, thus promoting personal pleasure.
