Is Anwar the last of the Mohicans?
BY: RAJA AMY
Former Malaysian prime minister, Mahathir Mohammad, once stated that if the Malays are not careful, ”they will be polishing the shoes of the other races,” which is to mean that they will be ‘colonised’ by the non Malays.
But as far back as the inception of the nation, where the first prime minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, on obtaining Merdeka or Independence from the British, severely warned the Malays not to be complacent and to safeguard their status in the country.
Since then, an array of Malay politicians have arrived on the scene chanting ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ or Malay supremacy but in reality these are mere slogan chants with much fiery gusto that have no meaning or bearing on the position of Malays.
The painful truth about the Malays is that they are still slothful and slumbering and over the last three general elections there are signs that their dominance has become weak and the other races have leapfrogged them.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI) is probably the last of the Mohicans to come on the scene to ask once and for all and to plead with the Malays to change their mindset and mend their ways with his propagation of the Madani concept.
There should no longer be any more excuses or dragging of the feet by the Malays as DSAI has stated that they should not take their special rights and privileges for granted if they lose their competitiveness in a now fully globalized world.
