The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry is mulling the idea of drafting a Bill in Parliament to monitor and regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Malaysia by labelling material produced as ‘AI generated’ or ‘AI assisted’.
But before this measure is adopted, before it goes to Parliament for debate, the ministry wants to conduct debate and discussions with technology experts, legal professionals, other stakeholders and the general public.
Ministry officials, when contacted by TMV, stated that these consultations will be kept robust and relevant and considers the measure of all round consultation as a strategic move as globally the trend is shifting towards the regulation of AI.
These officials stated that due to the growing and widespread use of AI, it is important to identify materials produced through the use of AI to ensure transparency and also to ensure informed consumption.
Officials stated that actively exploring and advocating for policy measures for content produced entirely or in part by AI to be identified is important and pushing for global practices such as certification can bolster transparency.
They stated that these standards include having guidelines on how to label ‘AI generated’ or ‘AI assisted’ content and how to provide easily understood explanations about the workings of AI systems.
