Sabah to have Space Centre
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry; Sovereign Segalang Sdn Bhd (SSSB); and Ukraine based Yuzhnoye State Design office (YSOD) to build a Space Centre.
With the agreement signed, feasibility studies will be conducted and the suitability of the construction of the Sabah International Space Launch Industry Centre will be undertaken over the next six to 12 months.
After the study considers the usability of an area, infrastructure suitability, safety factors and the technical requirements needed for the construction and operation of the centre, its final location will be determined.
If the space launch facility were to become a reality, it would only be the 16th spot for such a facility in the world and all costs will be borne by SSSB and YSOD, according to a statement released to the media.
The realization of this vision will mean that Malaysia will be the ninth country in the world to have space launch facilities and it could witness the development of between 300 to 500 downstream aerospace related companies opening up.
In order to support these aerospace launching companies, about 90 high income jobs will be created as well as a further employment of about 5,000 workers that will bring about a lot of economic benefits for the state.
