Singapore Turf Club to close down

Probably the only link remaining to show that Malaysia and Singapore were once one nation is the Malayan Racing Association (MRA) which acts as the authority for horse racing in these two countries from time immemorial.

But this final link between the two countries is set to come to an end with a recent announcement that the Singapore Turf Club (STC) will close after the staging of the 100th edition of the Gold Cup in October 2024.

The STC was founded in 1842 and have been staging horse races since then and later horse races were also established at the Selangor, Perak and Penang turf clubs who are the other members who form the MRA.

STC, which is located in Kranji, was actually built on land reclaimed by the Singapore government in the year 2000, and now their lease has been terminated as the turf club is to be redeveloped to provide public and private housing and other recreational activities.

In land scarce Singapore, where every inch of space is precious, it is considered a great luxury to have a turf club which takes up acres of land which the government now feels should be put to better use.

But there are petitions and appeals to the president of Singapore to revoke the government’s decision to close down the STC that are ongoing but it is not expected to see the light of day and the “Sport of Kings” is set to come to end on the island.
