Are Malaysians ready for endemicity?
Malaysia’s Ministry of Health has announced that they will soon impose a new Covid 19 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as the nation shifts into the endemic phase but health experts still urge caution and vigilance.
The low hospitalization rate of 5 percent of Covid 19 infected patients is among the positive indicators that the country is doing well in managing the virus but there has to be caution of potential outbreaks.
Since the majority of Covid 19 infections are mild and do not require hospitalization, health experts contend that Malaysians can coexist with the virus, just as what is happening in other countries around the world.
Local health experts state that they don’t notice any severe Covid 19 cases in other countries and they also note that most cases abroad are also mild and do not require hospitalization which indicates Malaysia is ready for the transition to endemicity.
These health experts also expect the rules on wearing masks on public transport and in clinical settings to be relaxed in the near future but urged the government to undertake surveillance and monitoring.
Other health experts contend that larger outbreaks can be avoided by alerting people via text messages on the current infection rate or areas involved in an outbreak so that people can take the necessary precautions.
