When did being Singaporean become special?
BY: CHRISTOPHER FERNANDEZ
Certain proChinese social media platforms from time to time highlight trivia involving Singaporeans and Malaysians are wondering why there is a need to suck up to them as if they are special or superior people.
The slant and angle of these stories by the media give the impression that anything Singaporean is newsworthy, a source of awe and wonder, that there are Malaysians fixated and obsessed with their activities.
While Malaysians acknowledge that Singapore has come far in life and has become one of the richest countries in the world and is considered a First World or advanced and developed nation, Malaysians gracefully take it in their stride.
This is because behind all that hype about Singapore and Singaporeans, they suffer from a growing number of shortcomings as a nation and Malaysians in the know who are aware of this can poke holes in their success story.
The reality on the ground is that in no way do Malaysians feel inferior or outclassed by Singaporeans as they are going in a certain direction and Malaysia is going in its own direction according to the wishes of its people.
There is therefore no basis of comparison between Malaysia and Singapore and this nation of ours is so tremendously blessed in its own right that there is no need to envy Singapore or even grant Singaporeans special rights and privileges.
