Workers are the backbone of the economy
BY: CATHERINE SAW
Every year on May 1 people around the world celebrate International Labour Day where the sacrifices, hard work and industry of the worker is accorded full respect and recognition and the worker being acknowledged as being the backbone of the economy.
Malaysians should know of worker rights and the important and influential role they play in this country which can be attested to by the presence of a very large population of migrant workers who are easing the shortage of workers..
This is why the worker must be cherished and given due importance as without them the economy will not move and progress and therefore the contribution of every worker counts whether blue collared or white collared.
Whether it is a local worker or a foreign worker is unimportant and the only fact that should be considered is that these workers are doing an honest day’s work for which they should receive just wages.
Not only is just compensation for workers necessary their welfare and well being must be looked into and they must receive due fringe benefits such as medical and hospital care, retirement contributions and decent accomodation.
The Human Resources Ministry must be firm in enforcing fairplay and ensure that workers are not manipulated or taken advantage of and that the worker can live a civilised, decent and comfortable life in this country.
