Practising altruism has its benefits
BY: NICHOLAS LIM
Ever heard of the saying, “it is more blessed to give than to receive” which really means that practising altruism or having unselfish concern for others has its benefits and takes us away from narrow minded thinking.
Being altruistic, however, is not easy and sometimes it demands a sacrifice on our part in showing concern and care for those who are poor, needy and disadvantaged, the vulnerable and weak among us.
But more people should be encouraged to be altruistic and to show care and concern for needy people regardless of their status in life as sometimes a person might be financially well off but not enjoy the support and encouragement that he or she needs.
Altruism is more than about giving, it’s about going to the ground to take care of people holistically and in every way possible. Once the mind is set and focused on the objective of being altruistic, it is important not to stray from our objective.
People who practise altruism generally live happy and fulfilled lives and they understand and appreciate that taking care of another individual is a noble task and they feel gratified in being able to help a person.
This is why more people should learn the benefits of being altruistic and not live selfish, self centred lives but have an outward nature in being there for people who are needy and desperate living in our midst.
