Timely to improve National Film Policy
The number of Malaysians who channeled their views on social media over the heavy censorship of a few locally produced films is an indication that all is not well with the relationship between film makers and the government.
But the Communications & Digital Ministry is looking to fine tune the National Film Policy to improve and stimulate the development of the country’s creative industry by engaging with all the involved stakeholders.
The ministry pointed out to the media that this involved several specific matters not only related to local creative industry players but also ongoing efforts by the government to attract foreign production companies to Malaysia.
The ministry noted that the move was important to empower the sector which has the potential to attract foreign investments just in the next few years which is estimated to factor at over RM1 billion.
Other factors the ministry hopes to work out are the strengthening of cooperation with industry players and the government, working to improve the “Film in Malaysia Incentive” and the legal aspects related to the sector.
The ministry stated that efforts to improve and empower the industry not only needed the cooperation of agencies in its ministry such as the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia or Finas but other agencies and ministries including the Finance Ministry.
