Change attitudes towards use of plastic

The root cause of plastic pollution is not the single use plastics but human behaviour and, whether we like it or not, humans now cannot live without it as it is used widely in food, medicines, clothing and cosmetics, among others.

Since humans cannot live without the use of plastic, it is time for a change in attitude as due to a lack of education and awareness people are throwing away plastic waste indiscriminately and polluting drains, rivers and the sea.

These days the plastic soups floating on the surface of the oceans were generated by humans and are destroying the marine ecosystem as it is consumed by marine life and then enters the human body as microplastics.

This is set to have an impact on humanity in the near future and people must be educated on the correct way to manage plastics use by establishing a holistic control mechanism in a circular economy.

Countries that have successfully managed the use of plastics did it by educating their young from kindergarten to primary school to use these products responsibly and, as a result, these children grew up with a conscience to save planet Earth.

Other suggestions include anti litter laws and extended producer responsibility where there is a collection of a levy from plastic producers and retailers and this levy can be used to assist industries to upgrade to robotic systems.
