Restructuring of government agencies
In an expected move and a sweeping reform, government agencies are being restructured and the National Recovery Council (NRC) has been disbanded by prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI) due to an overlap of government duties.
DSAI explained that the NRC, which was created to handle the Covid 19 pandemic, was necessary at that time but is now disbanded as there is an overlap of duties, leading to redundancy, and it will only increase his administration’s operating costs.
This housecleaning measures also applied to DSAI himself as he stated that he and the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, has identified several duties which the prime minister can delegate.
Many Malaysians believe that the NRC was established to appease its chairman, Muhyiddin Yassin, and this position which he held since last year also came with the status of being a full-fledged minister.
Other steps taken include the reappointment of former Machang MP, Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, as Felcra Bhd chairman which has been put on hold and DSAI stated that his deputy, Ahmad Zahid, has been informed of the matter.
DSAI stated that there is confusion on the appointment of politicians into such positions but while saying this is permissible, he also noted that they must have suitable experience and qualifications and a pledge to adhere to rules and practices.
