Can the ‘nearly man’ become Prime Minister?
BY: LEEZA KAMARUDIN
In the minds and hearts of many Malaysians and a wide spattering of the international community, maverick politician Anwar Ibrahim, or better known as DSAI (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), is best tagged as the ‘nearly man’.
The reason he is described as the ‘nearly man’ is because on a few occasions he nearly became the Prime Minister. Now the question that is uppermost among people in the 15th General Election is whether DSAI will be installed as the next Prime Minister by the Malaysian King.
Once again, it looks like he is nearly there or thereabouts. Now that polling is over and Malaysians expect Pakatan Harapan to give a strong showing in this election, it is anyone’s guess if this time DSAI will come to the pinnacle of power in this country.
It has been a long and winding road for DSAI who began his political career as an Islamic radical before undergoing a metamorphosis that created a maturing and tempering in him that now sees him holding sway over Malaysians of all walks of life.
Former Malaysian dictator and UMNO strongman, Mahathir Mohammad, in a recent television interview commented that DSAI’s belief that he is loved by all is a fallacy and that he needs to get real.
But compared to Mahathir, whose legacy is now in tatters, DSAI’s star is shining bright and is on an ascendancy but whether he gets to become prime minister is what everyone that is following events eagerly wishes to know.
