Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob  said the details of Community Development Department (KEMAS) teachers and other staff would be referred to the Rural Development Ministry regarding their involvement in politics for guidelines to be drawn up.

He said Malaysians will have to wait for the details to see the extent to which these people can engage in politics, or whether they can hold a post in a party and attend political functions without any action taken against them.

Ismail Sabri said the move is in line with the tenets and obligations of democracy but the KEMAS members must wait for the guidelines to be published.

The National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) and other stakeholders have been consulted for their views and opinions.

The Prime Minister said these guidelines were actually in force previously but the practice was barred by the Pakatan Harapan government.

Ismail Sabri said improvements will be made to the guidelines and hopefully it would prevent cases where several women leaders of a political party had to resign from their posts when disallowed from being involved in politics as they were members of KEMAS.
