A temple is far worse than a prostitution den, says Islamic preacher
An Islamic preacher has gone viral on social media for his controversial comments after a group of Muslim undergraduate students helped to clean up a Hindu temple.
In a discussion, whether it is appropriate for a Muslim to clean up the House of a non-Muslim, he said, “If a brothel got inundated by floodwaters and mud, are we supposed to help clean it up so that customers and prostitutes can continue having a good time there?”
The preacher, Abdul Halim Abdullah, answered “Of course not,” claiming that a temple is far worse than a prostitution den because it is a place of idolatry.
His comments were picked up by Siti Kasim, a lawyer-activist, who was ridiculed for such divisive statements.
On Twitter, she said, “Don’t they have empathy towards others?”
She believed that if ‘kuil’ was replaced with ‘masjid’, he would have called for blood.
Raja Rajanathan pities the preacher as its people like him who bring the nation down.
“He should have been sent back to the olden age where people stay in caves because that’s his level of mentality,” he said.
He added that there are far too many religious teachers in Malaysia that take on extremist views.
The students involved were from the Islamic University Malaysia in Gombak (IIUM), offering their time to contribute to cleaning up a Hindu temple in Taman Klang Utama.
