December 15 will be a monumental day as the government is set to implement the UNDI 18 law, allowing citizens aged 18 to 20 to vote in the next General Election.

Chief Secretary to the Government said, “The Yang di-Pertuan Agong appoints 15 December 2021, as the date on which Section 3 of the Act comes into operation.”

He added that the law would set the minimum voting age at 18 and registrations would be automatic.

After two years of delays, youths of Malaysia led by UNDI 18 group are in celebrations as their voices are being heard.

EC Deputy Chairman, Azmi Sharom has provided a figure that an estimated one million voters would benefit from this law.

On social media, people were in praises for the youths that were fighting for the cause.

Hazel Lee said, “Well done to everyone for the hard work and persistence over the years.”

She also was grateful to the politicians, government and opposition blocs, who had supported the movement.

Ashley Liew, a university student, is glad that she would be participating in an election before the age of 21.

“It is a big responsibility to go and vote. So, for the government to trust that youths can carry the responsibility on their shoulders is the right move for a more open and inclusive society,” she said.
