The National Unity Minister confirmed in Parliament that the government has no intentions of implementing new Qlaws in regard to race relations.

Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique in a reply to opposition’s M. Kulasegaran said, “We have no plans to enact such laws. This is because we have present laws which will be used as they cover all aspects.”

Her response as a minister who is supposed to be in touch with the current state of race subjects in Malaysia has left the public surprised by the lack of new laws.

Mathew Mathen thinks that the minister either does not want to work on the issue or is blind towards it.

He said, “All these laws have failed miserably, the present relations between races have reached an all-time low.”

He added that this is due to our politicians and religious leaders who have done their best to keep the people apart for their political gain.

If new laws are not drafted to address the racial tension, Adrian Chin wants the government to keep politicians in check when talking about race and religion.

“We must make laws to penalise politicians who use race and religion to anger the people. They are the number 1 culprits in this country,” he said.

Deputy National Unity Minister Senator Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad has supported Halimah’s statement claiming that the Sedition Act 1948 is sufficient to tackle threats to national unity.
