The Kedah state government’s decision to ban 4D lottery shops from renewing their operating licenses has been condemned.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor in a press conference said, “This move is to ensure that Kedah will be free from gambling.”

He added that as a Muslim he is obliged by Allah to follow the instructions of the Islamic religion.

Muhammad Sanusi will not accept any criticism and told the people they can go to Penang to buy numbers.

The ban has made Malaysians upset especially since it is an activity for non-Muslims only.

Darren Ting questioned, “Why are you banning it when it is only for people outside of Islam?”

Even though this is seen as a good idea by some, the ban may lead to more illegal gambling operating in the state.

Others have accused the PAS government of using the lottery subject to upset the non-Muslims for political purposes.

Karthigeyan Goona wants to see Menteri Besar approach corruption in a similar fashion which is even more vulnerable to the people.

“It’s strange that corruption is still halal but 4D is haram. Politicians always have something to say and slap a religion issue on it,” she said.

On top of the lottery ban, alcoholic drinks within the state will be limited, suggesting that it would not affect non-Muslim consumers.
