Encourage employment of mature age workers

It is critical and important that the Malaysian government pave the way to encourage the employment of mature age workers as many of them are still healthy, fit and well but have depleted savings and investments to retire.

According to the Employees Provident Fund or EPF, most Malaysians who are 55 years or older have less than RM10,000 in their EPF account and this means they have to look for a source of livelihood.

But some employers contend that they can employ a candidate half the age of a senior and pay him half the salary of what they will have to pay a person with vast experience. While this may be true perhaps the salaries of seniors should be accordingly adjusted.

This endemic stage of the Covid-19 is witnessing a lot of unemployment and both young and old are competing in the job market and it is necessary to ensure that the salaries of any employee, even if he is a mature worker, is fully based on deliverables.

This way the playing field in the employment market is level and everyone can have the opportunity to find meaningful and gainful employment whereby the government must show the way by creating job opportunities.

Unless and only if a mature worker is certified unable to do a task by the necessary medical and other evaluations of his profile then these elderly people will have no choice but to retire and perhaps manage on welfare.
