The state of Melaka is going to the polls and the east Malaysian state of Sarawak are also gearing up for elections and it won’t be long before the nation goes through another general election which has to be called by early 2023.

While it is still very early to discern what electoral outcomes will be like, the bigger picture on the drawing board is what kind of leaders do Malaysians wish to elect, as this will decide what kind of direction the country is heading towards.

The kind of politicians that Malaysians vote for will also be a gauge and reflection of the maturity of voters and what is on the mindset of Malaysians as a nation and this is why right now it is hard to decide the eventual winners.

For starters, it is suggested that Malaysians opt for credible leaders with a proven track record of being able to serve and deliver the goods rather than those who make election promises and pledges that are far-fetched which they cannot keep.

Voters should be practical and realistic and be guided by wholly secular principles which are irrespective of race or religion. Choose candidates on the basis of being able to move the country forward.

The onus of responsibility is on the voters and they must not subscribe to narrow and short-sighted thinking but be open minded and embrace the values of political candidates that are good, beneficial and will lead this nation towards betterment for all Malaysians.
