In a joint statement, the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore announced that they will reopen their mutual border with a special Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Changi Airport from Nov.29.
After more than a year of anticipation, the decision followed significant progress in vaccinating their citizens and in managing the Covid-19 pandemic in their respective countries.
Under the VTL, fully-vaccinated travellers will be able to travel between Singapore and Malaysia and be subjected to Covid-19 tests in lieu of serving quarantine or a stay-at-home notice.
Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Mr. Lee Hsien Loong agreed that it was timely to progressively resume cross-border travel between both countries in a safe manner.
The two Prime Ministers said they recognized that Covid-19 had disrupted people-to-people connections between both countries and had separated families for many months.
The joint border has been closed since March 18, 2020.
Ismail Sabri and Lee, who both spoke on the telephone, said that they also looked forward to restoring travel across land links between both nations in the near future.
