Medical practioners and members of the public have been warned against using the anti-viral drug Ivermectin to treat Covid-19 following a clinical study that confirmed it is ineffective against the coronavirus.
A clinical study conducted locally concluded that Ivermectin cannot be used in current Covid-19 treatment as it does not prevent severe cases of Covid-19.
The I-Tech study by the Institute of Clinical Research (ICR) revealed that those who took Ivermectin, experienced three times more adverse effects with the most common complaint being diarrhoea.
The study was conducted on 500 patients who had been hospitalised for Covid-19 in Stages Two or Three.
The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) stated that any attempt to buy Ivermectin over the counter for use in treating Covid-19 would be contravening the law.
According to the MMA, Ivermectin is a drug that is available in Malaysia for specific indications, which do not include being a therapeutic agent in the treatment of Covid-19.
