Number of vehicles on the road manageable

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the number of vehicles on the road is manageable as vehicles that are no longer in service are not removed from the Road Transport Department’s (RTD) database.

This follows growing complaints by Malaysians that there are too many vehicles on the road especially once the interstate travel ban had been lifted.

The ban on interstate travel was imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus but MAA stated that people prefer their own transportation for safety reasons.

MAA explained that those who cannot afford to own their own vehicles will have no choice but to resort to using public transport. But MAA says that public transport is still not up to the mark.

In the Klang Valley, which is the nucleus of the nation, public transportation such as the LRT and MRT train services and feeder buses are helping but in rural areas there is a lack of regular bus services.

MAA believes there are only 10 to 15 percent of unused vehicles that are still considered active in the RTD database.
