UMNO President, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s daughter has angered Malaysians after mocking the serious issue of period poverty in Malaysia within the B40 community.

Datuk Nurul Hidayah had posted on her Instagram allegedly stating that women who cannot afford sanitary pads turn to get pregnant to avoid menstruating.

Her statement comes after Pejuang Women’s Youth Wing (Pejuanita Muda) Chief Dr. Nurul Ashikin Mabahwi had urged the government to give free sanitary kits to B40 communities.

The sensitive remarks by the public figure were widely criticised by the public, calling her tone-deaf.

Riley Song said, “If you have only RM100 left for the month with two kids and ageing parents to feed, let me know if spending RM8.90 for a bag of the pad is one of your priorities.”

She added that the businesswomen will not be able to relate to the burden of the poor as she was born with a golden spoon.

Mingli Lin advised that instead of making a fool of herself, she should donate sanitary pads from her existing business.

“Your father knew how to talk but not much action. You sound a lot like your father,” he said.

Asha Dhillon agreed that she should do something about the issue rather than denying it.

“I couldn’t afford it when I was a teenager. My father was a government servant and we couldn’t afford so many things including pads,” she said.

Nurul Ashikin has rebutted the tone-deaf opinion claiming, “Awareness of period poverty is not only directed to men, but also to rich women who think period poverty is not relevant.”
