Youth and Sports Minister questions Pandelela over ‘late’ sexual harassment allegations
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has questioned Datuk Pandelela Rinong’s sexual harassment allegations which she recently shared on social media.
Ahmad Faizal said, “I am trying to understand why after a long time, Lela wants to put this out on social media.”
The Minister claimed that the matter is currently being dealt with and will meet with the former Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin to probe the incident.
However, Pandelela has come out and said that she shared it now to support other sexual harassment victims.
“I shared my ‘not so nice’ experience to give awareness to the public, and support for victims out there, who are always in dilemma, whether to speak up or stay silent,” she said.
The Olympian diver added that she fully supports #rapejokeisnotfunny, hoping to encourage the future ones to be brave when she wasn’t.
Malaysians on social media advised that the minister should look at a recent case in the United States whereby a gymnastic coach had sexually abused athletes, that included minors.
In the trial, the perpetrator had used his position to take advantage and escape while not being caught.
Malaysians pointed out that the athletes were not brave enough as speaking out may jeopardize their hardworking careers.
