Government shouldn’t clampdown on dissent

BY: CHA HUI YEE
Certain prominent personalities and certain organizations have questioned the wisdom of so many Malaysians, especially netizens, who spew criticism at the government and they say that this is a pointless exercise which must stop.
They claim that this approach only creates a certain kind of fatigue among the political leaders in the country who have to counter a barrage of criticism despite seemingly doing their utmost to serve the country.
But the reason why there is so much criticism and dissent is simply because it is not being addressed or looked into but falling on the deaf ears of authorities who prefer not to take any form of action.
As long as this attitude and stance is maintained by the authorities, the lambasting, criticism and dissent will continue and if the government seeks to clampdown on this it will be construed as a violation of freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
Malaysians of all walks of life must be given the freedom to express their anger, frustration and angst and this is the only way to get the authorities going so they don’t sleep on the job or neglect their duties and responsibilities.
The government instead, to promote a healthy democracy, must allow for debate and discussion openly by the people and they should gather and collate all feedback and information and take the necessary forms of action to appease and satisfy Malaysians.
