High rate of divorce applications a concern to Malaysians

The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law) had released a statistic that five divorce applications are filed every hour in the country.
The Deputy, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said, “An average of 18 divorce applications are filed by non-Muslim couples a day while 121 Muslim couples file for divorce a day.”
Malaysians on social media were concerned about the stat and wondered if today’s standards of marriage are bearing any quality.
Augustin Anthony said, “I’m not surprised as many people these days tend to make the mistake of looking for the wrong things in a life partner.”
He added that being in a marriage is more than just physical looks and a person’s intelligence. Rather it includes understanding the strengths and weaknesses as well as personality for a fruitful long-term marriage.
Denis Shen thinks social media has not helped relationships as it encourages narcissistic values.
He claims that social media also allows one to be replaceable quickly.
“From Facebook to Tinder dating available in Malaysia, it is easy to access to meet someone new whenever the current relationship does not work out,” he said.
Denis wondered if the meaning of marriage could be extinct if future generations keep on this risky trend.
