Driving licenses should still be permitted to the elderly

Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong has said that the government will continue to permit driving licenses to senior citizens if they are fit to drive.

The Transport Minister had said that retracting or limiting senior citizens to driving licences should be a last resort once it is proven they are unable to drive.

He had also claimed that there are divers above the age of 70 who display better driving proficiency than younger drivers.

On social media, the decision was seen as a benefit especially to those aged 70 and above.

Thomas Foo, 73, believes it is the responsibility of the families who should stop their senior members from driving if they are unfit to drive.

He agrees with Dr Wee, that senior citizens are healthy and are better drivers than those reckless young drivers.

Additionally, Thomas has been driving for more than five decades and has never claimed any insurance money.

“There are many senior citizens who don’t live with their families and need to drive to do some errands by driving short distances to these places,” he added.

Nadarajah Kulanthaiappan also wrote that accidents among senior citizens seemed to be isolated cases.

The engineer wants the discrimination among the elderly to stop as most cases are happening due to younger drivers.

The Royal Malaysian Police earlier proposed that there should be new standards for senior citizens when they apply or renew their licenses.

Federal Traffic Police Chief Datuk Azisman Alias said there was a frequent trend that involves the elderly aged 60 to 70 years and above.

The chief added, “Some senior citizens have forgetfulness or senility and many cases of driving against traffic were because they took the wrong turn.”
