Are extended hours for restaurants going to be a benefit?

The Malaysian Indian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) has warned that restaurant owners would face increase costs with operating hours extended to midnight.
President of Presma Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said that although the government’s decision is an economic lifeline, the higher operational cost would incur as workers would be required to work additional hours.
He added, “Indian Muslim restaurants are unlikely to operate until midnight due to the shortage of workers that we are facing now, which is a dilemma for us. Some of our foreign workers who have returned to their countries cannot come back, while locals are not interested in working in restaurants.”
To mitigate the higher cost and lack of workers, Indian Muslim restaurants may opt for self-service so decent customer service is available.
Johor Malay Non-governmental Organisations Coalition Council president Zaini Atan was also describing the government’s move as a lifesaver. Having owned a food business for the better part of two decades, he was able to bring in RM 300,000 in monthly revenue.
But since the unforgiving pandemic hit, he lost 80 per cent of the usual revenue.
Senior Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein on Tuesday (Sept 21) said that regardless of the phase the state is in, petrol stations, eateries and convenience stores are allowed to be opened till midnight.
