UNDI18 activist grateful for government not appealing High Court ruling
The UNDI18 activist has expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government for not appealing the recent Kuching High Court’s ruling on Tuesday, September 7.
Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said in a press conference that Putrajaya would abide by the ruling of the Kuching High Court.
He added, “It has not been decided yet whether we want to appeal. I will discuss this with the attorney-general and the Cabinet. But the EC has been instructed to prepare to implement this (by Dec 31).”
The Persatuan Pengundi Muda, pioneers of UNDI18, accepted the decision as an empowering moment for 1.2 million Malaysian youth.
They believed that by December, youths will obtain their right to participate in Malaysia’s democratic process for the first time as voters.
The statement concluded, “We are encouraged to see this development as an indicator of the current government’s commitment to listen and collaborate with youth voters.”
The much-talked-about UNDI18 bill was approved by the Dewan Negara back in July 2019.
The Election Commission of Malaysia had planned to implement the law in July 2020 but was delayed due to pandemic reasons.
