Government has until December 31 to enact Undi 18, orders Sarawak Court
A Sarawak High Court has ordered the Federal Government to enact Undi 18 by December 31 on Friday, September 3.
Urged by five Sarawakian youths, a judicial review was taken against the Prime Minister, federal government and Election Commission.
In a released UndiSarawak statement they said, “We would like to express our utmost gratitude to the court for honouring the constitutional rights of Malaysian youth by allowing the application made with regard to the enforcement of Undi18, by December 2021.”
Judicial Commissioner Alexander Siew ruled that the Undi 18 was not acted with all convenient speed to implement the lowering of the age.
Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq said that millions of young people have won today.
He added hope citing it was a political earthquake that will forever change the landscape of Malaysian politics.
Malaysian youths were also in a joyous mood on social media.
Pravind Premnath on Twitter wrote, “This is a HUGE step forward!! Beyond amazing job by the #Undi18 team in pushing the state to fulfil the right to vote for the youth.”
If the government was to implement the UNDI 18 law, about eight million new voices would be heard in the upcoming 15th General Election.
