National Paralympian receive support from Malaysians over disqualification
Malaysians were left fuming when National Paralympian, Ahmad Ziyad Zolkepli, was disqualified over a call room violation.
Ziyad initially had won the F20 Men’s shot put with a stunning world record of 17.94m. But the Ukraine’s upset over the results protested that Ziyad had enter the call area late.
On social media, Malaysians expressed their frustration which included ministers and athletes.
Twitter user, @bayuarisandee, who loves ASEAN countries said, Ziyad’s name should be remembered. “He broke the world record and won gold. He excluded that Ukraine’s were the gold medallist.”
Former Youth and Sports minister had also shared that the decision was shameful. The Rembau MP said, “It was an absolute disgrace that goes against the spirit of the Paralympics. If it was a call room violation you should have not allowed them to compete in the first place. Mean spirited and petty. A stolen gold medal and world record.”
Citizens commented on the Rio gold medallist Instagram that he did not need to apologise.
@Aida.mujaini stated that Ziyad did not need to say sorry for doing his best. She added that even if the appeal was against him, Malaysians will continue to support the Selangor athlete in subsequent tournaments. Aida was proud that he was Malaysia’s pride and champion.
An appeal was made but the World Para Athletics upheld its decision on Wednesday (Sept 1).
