PM invites opposition for help but doesn’t explain their role
Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob had said that he wants the opposition to join him in helping the nation recover on Sunday, August 22.
In his first speech as Prime Minister, he referred to citizens as a ‘Malaysian Family’ to encourage unity after the previous political distress.
The Bera MP said, “To me, the concept of a Malaysian Family is akin to the strength of a nation bound together by values found within families with a proper upbringing.”
His inclusion of the opposition party was seen as a positive move.
DAP Secretary-General, Lim Guan Eng stated the party was open to Ismail’s guidance if it meant they could join the National Recovery Council (NRC) and the Special Committee on Covid-19.
However, the wary Bagan MP said the inclusion should not just be a token representation.
“The winner cannot take all and the loser should not lose all,” he added.
Political experts had said that opposition including themselves in the government could backfire on them if the government fails.
Professor Awang Azman Pawi of University Malaya claimed, “If Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional are to form a unity government, the failure of this government will be fully borne by everyone. With the pandemic and current economic situation, will the opposition be willing to share the failure?”
He insisted that the best option for the opposition party is to wait for the next General Election.
