The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has elected Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob as 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia on Friday, August 20.

The Palace released a statement that the UMNO Vice President will be appointed based on Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

The decision by the Agong came after a special meeting with the Malay Rulers today (Aug 20).

The meeting which ended at 4:13 p.m. were not attended by the Sultan of Johor, Perlis and Kelantan.

Ismail will be appointed at the Istana Negara at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Aug 21).

The Bera MP becomes the successor of the current interim Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The parting of Muhyiddin began with 14 UMNO representatives withdrawing from the Perikatan Nasional coalition on August 9.

Anwar Ibrahim claimed that he had enough Parliament seats to head the government. But 114 MPs had vouched their support for Ismail to the Agong yesterday (Aug 19).

The elected Prime Minister will need to prove his legitimacy with a confidence vote in Parliament quickly, as commanded by His Majesty.
