Candlelight vigil causes 31 people detained
A candlelight vigil saw 31 representatives of Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) being apprehended by the police at Dataran Merdeka on Thursday, August 19.
The vigil held to honour the memory of more than 13,000 lives lost was brought to an abrupt end when police hauled the participants into a Black Maria.
They were then brought to the Dangi Wangi police station to record their statement.
Nalina Nair from DAP live-streamed the 42-minute disorderly incident on Instagram which has reached 133,000 views.
She was seen asking the police if the participants were being arrested and if so, wanted their rights readout.
The police replied that they were taken only for documentation.
The agitated Nalina continued to shout “Lawan! Lawan!” and “Are we being arrested!?”
She told journalists, before being dispersed, that it was nonsensical that the police want to arrest them for documentation, citing it is illegal.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Noor Dellhan Yahaya told that RM 2,000 compound notices were handed to the participants.
He added, “Each of them was issued with a compound notice of RM2,000. We are investigating for various offences including violations of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).”
