Anwar Ibrahim, Shafie Apdal and Ismail Sabri expected to be nominated
Several political parties have chosen their nominees for the vacant Prime Minister post.
During a late-night meeting on Tuesday (Aug 17) with UMNO Member of Parliaments, a decision was made to support Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister candidate.
The decision was a complete agreement and did not raise any doubts. The UMNO Vice-President has now statutory declarations from all Barisan MPs ready to be sent to the King.
Attendee Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the party was looking for stable leadership. He added, “We want stability for the country and economy and we need to focus on Covid-19.”
As for Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah, it would be between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Shafie told Astro Awani on Tuesday (Aug 17) that it was agreed that the person who can accumulate the most votes will lead.
He also said that collectively they have 105 MPs. Pakatan Harapan (88), Warisan (8), Pejuang (4), Parti Sarawak (2), Upko (1), Muda (1) and Maszlee Malike who is independent.
He insisted that when Anwar gathers a majority, Warsian will be fully supportive of the coalition.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had stated that all MPs are required to declare their support for a Prime Minister candidate by Wednesday (Aug 18) at 4.p.m.
