Herbs can bring us numerous health benefits. These plants could be grown easily in flower pots or in your backyard. Herbs could be used for medical purposes, flavouring, as garnishes and even fragrances.
In Malaysian cooking, we often use herbs to enhance the flavour of the dish. Chinese dishes contain lots of garlic. Garlic is good for our immune system and it helps cure fever and flu. It also helps reduce the symptoms of high blood pressure and is good for our heart. Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.
Another common herb found in Malaysia is onion. Red onions and yellow onions are found in nearly every store in the vegetable section. Onions help regulate blood pressure and are great for our digestive system. However, consuming too much onions would give you bad breath. It contains antioxidants and compounds that fight inflammation.
Herbs such as curry leaves are commonly found in Indian cooking. These leaves are known to treat diarrhea and constipation. It is anti-bacterial and has anti-cancer properties.
Meanwhile, Sage could help improve our brain function, memory and mood. Like most herbs, it is anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants. It also treats throat infections, infected gums and mouth ulcers. The herb also reduces blood sugar levels and is beneficial to women’s health.
Basils contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It helps reduce oxidative stress and fight free radicals in the body that will lead to cell damage and other health diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Basils also protect us against infection as the oils in this herb could help fight bacteria.
Rosemary also contains high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It is also full of iron, calcium, Vitamin A, C and B-6. This herb helps boost our immune system and improves blood circulation. It also helps relieve stress and heal digestive problems.
Herbs indeed have healing power and there are many more other herbs with good benefits. It’s good to learn about the nutrients herbs have to offer as we could incorporate them in our diet to achieve optimal health.
