Emergency Power Snatched from the King of Malaysia
Malaysia’s King Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin has been revoked of His emergency ordinances in a sudden move by the Perikatan Nasional government.
During the recent Parliament session on Monday (July 26th), Takiyuddin Hassan, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said that the government will not be seeking any advice from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to declare a longer emergency.
The emergency ordinance that was set earlier this year on January 12th will now be annulled. There was a total of 6 emergencies that were gazetted and now have been revoked on July 21, he added.
In response to this, the national palace had released a statement saying that the Yang diPertuan Agong had not consent to the government’s decision. “In line with this, His Majesty is deeply saddened by the statement made in parliament on Jul 26 that the government has revoked all emergency ordinances proclaimed by His Majesty throughout the state of emergency period, while the revocation has not been consented to by His
Majesty.” The King also stated that his suggestion of having a debate on the emergency ordinances in Parliament was ignored and had made Him disappointed.
Since the release of the royal statement, Anwar Ibrahim the opposition leader has filed a motion of no confidence in Parliament against the Perikatan Nasional government. The United Malays National Organisation has also demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for failing to manage the pandemic crisis.
