Singaporean Rapper Yung Raja Responds Positively To Jimmy Fallon Roasting His Latest Track
They say all publicity is good publicity, and Yung Raja seems to think so too; especially when it means getting your song played live on American national TV by Jimmy Fallon.
On a July 12th episode of the Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, the comedian brought up the Singaporean rapper’s first U.S single ‘Mami’ during the show’s “Do Not Play” segment, where he roasts songs that he suggests his viewers to avoid.
Fallon held up a vinyl of the track, noting the 26-year-old’s choice of cover art, donning a white sweatshirt and chilling in bathtub, to which he joked that “sometimes you go, look, you pay $25, you sleep in a tub. So maybe that’s why the picture was taken there.”
The host goes on to play a snippet of ‘Mami’, seeming unamused at the continuous hook in the lyrics where the rapper sings the track’s title over and over. “Now that’s how you write a song right there,” quipped the host sarcastically when the song ended.
You’d think that this would be bad news for the rapper, but he seemed to take it in stride and celebrating his official debut on Fallon’s show in a Twitter response thanking the talk show host for playing his song, excitedly captilazing “THIS IS INSANE”.
The rapper also couldn’t help but share the love on his Instagram page with a clip from the segment, with captions reading “I think Jimmy Fallon isn’t a big fan of mami BUT HELLO WE MADE IT TO THE TONIGHT SHOW (Questlove do be vibin tho)”. No hard feelings right?
Since breaking into the local hip-hop scene with ‘Mustafa’, Yung Raja released ‘Mami’ in March, his first single under US label Alamo Records. The young rapper is also signed to Def Jam Southeast Asia, a subsidiary under Universal Music Group.
