Jung Ilhoon Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison For Marijuana Possession
Former BTOB member Jung Ilhoon has been sentenced today (June 10th) by the Seoul Central District Court to spend 2 years in prison for illegal purchase and use of marijuana, and fined a total of 133 million KRW (approximately USD$ 119,200).
The 26-year-old singer stood trial for suspicions of purchasing and smoking 826 grams of marijuana across between July 5th 2016 and January 9th 2019, along with seven other defendants on 161 occasions.
The court stated that “the defendants communicated through the dark web in order for their crime to not be easily detected, and they used elaborate criminal methods such as making transactions with the cryptocurrency bitcoin.”
According to website Koreaboo, the judge in view of the sentencing also found it necessary that the singer be arrested in court, as they believed there was a high possibility of the singer making an attempt to flee.
During the trial, the rapper’s lawyers made pleas for leniency for their client who had a difficult time as an idol as he “worked in the entertainment industry at such a young age”, and merely tried to relieve the stress “in the wrong way.”
Prior to this sentencing, the prosecution requested that defendant face four years in prison with a fine for his crimes.
